Welcome to Secondary Education Secondary EducationSecondary Education is part of the Millard Public Schools Educational Services Division and includes six middle schools, three comprehensive high schools and two alternative programs. The Secondary Education Office works directly with secondary teachers and administrators in researching, aligning, developing, implementing and monitoring curriculum in grades six through twelve. The Curriculum Frameworks are approved by the Board of Education and are the guiding document for writing teams as they develop course guides that assist in ensuring the written curriculum is the taught curriculum while providing consistent academic expectations throughout the district. Curriculum Frameworks are available for the following subjects: Art, Business, Computer Science, Counseling, Family/Consumer Science, Health, Industrial Technology, Language Arts, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, and World Language. Middle schools within the Millard District provide a variety of learning experiences while meeting the intellectual, social, ethical, and physical needs of 11-14 year old students through programs and instructional practices that focus on high academic expectations, interdisciplinary teams, and exploratory offerings. The Millard Middle School Position Paper includes the district middle school Philosophy, Essential Elements, Operational Parameters, which assists middle level staff members in providing a consistent middle level model across the district. The middle level program is designed to transition students from elementary school while providing curriculum with a focus on middle level learners in preparation for high school and post-secondary opportunities. The Middle Level Course Descriptions highlights required and exploratory courses by grade level, which are available to students. Goal setting through a Middle Level Personal Learning Plan assists with the current academic focus towards transition to high school courses and expectations. Millard Public Schools provides rigorous courses for students as they explore a variety of interests while preparing for graduation and post-secondary endeavors. Students are highly encouraged to not only meet graduation requirements but to select challenging courses that allow them to explore and strengthen areas of interest while exceeding requirements. Students planning to attend college are highly encouraged to take at least one Advanced Placement (AP®) level course, which often leads to college credit while in high school. High school students are also able to select a Diploma Path, either Liberal Arts or Specialty, to pursue during their high school years as another opportunity to seek a more rigorous sequence of study by earning a Commended or Distinguished distinction within their Diploma Path. Career Academies implemented during the 2009-2010 school year will also provide a unique opportunity for students to explore a career field while completing high school and college level courses and internships while earning dual enrollment credit. The Curriculum Handbook and Registration Guide is designed to assist students with planning for high school and beyond by providing information on Graduation Requirements, Course Descriptions, Specialized Programs, and Planning Resources. Students use their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) as a tool to help identify and document their accomplishments, strengths and interests while creating goals, plans and documenting progress towards those goals. The PLP serves as a guide to prepare for graduation, post-secondary education and a career. The PLP is completed using the Naviance Succeed web resource and is accessed by a link on each high school homepage. Additional Mini-Magnets are available at both the middle and high school levels including middle level Montessori and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. Millard Public School District understands that not every student has the ability or desire to be successful within a large middle or high school program. Both the Middle School Alternative Program (MSAP) and Millard Horizon High School assist students in being successful academically within smaller, positive learning environments. Parents are encouraged to be involved with monitoring their middle level or high school child’s grades and attendance though the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. Besides being able to monitor grades, viewing the Parent Portal allows the opportunity to build knowledge about your child’s assignments and projects which can add to parent and child conversations about what is being learned, assist in making connections to the work place and discussions about future possibilities. Research shows that students receiving Family Support and experiencing Positive Family Communications, two of the 40 Developmental Assets®, perform better academically throughout their school years. |
